The Splendour of Iran
$307.7
The Splendour of Iran provides an entirely new insight into both the traditions and contemporary life of one of the world’s most ancient civilizations. With 1,250 newly commissioned photographs, The Splendour of Iran displays the richness of Persian culture from the glories of Iran’s past, such as the ruined city of Persepolis and the mosques at Isfahan, to contemporary scenes of city and rural life, as well as works of art from museums and collections drawn from every corner of Iran and beyond. PThe three volumes cover every aspect of Iran’s art and culture, from the Sasanian reliefs at Parsargadae through contemporary wall painting in Tehran, including architecture, sculpture, gardens, mosaics, paintings, miniatures, illuminated manuscripts, carpets, gold and silverware-from ancient times through to the collection of the ex-Shah-and ceramics. The recent history and present-day life of the Iranian people is also shown through original photography and commentary. PMore than a survey, The Splendour of Iran offers a fresh approach to the subject through new photography, high-quality design and lucid text written by Iran’s leading academics and art historians. They light on Iran’s recent history and contemporary life as much as its past, but above all convey a vibrant sense of the country, its art, and its people. The Splendour of Iran, designed by Pentagram, is to be published jointly with Iran University Press, Iran’s leading publishers of academic and fine art books. PThe Splendour of Iran represents a unique partnership, combining Iranian scholarship and new photography with British design and publishing. PAn invaluable source of reference for the specialist and a highly prized edition to the general reader’s bookshelf.

The Persian Garden
$25.48
For more than three thousand years, the Persian garden has been a focus of Iran’s national imagination, influencing its art, literature, and even religion. The Persian garden’s inspirational role has, however, extended far beyond the land of its origin; its precepts have exerted a profound influence on garden design around the world. The Persian Garden: Echoes of Paradise chronicles the history of the Persian garden, from the magnificent sanctuaries and hunting parks of fifth-century b.c. Persepolis to the magical nightingale gardens of nineteenth-century Tehran. All were seen as a kind of earthly paradise (the English word paradise has its roots in the old Persian word pairi-daeza meaning a walled space). To an astonishing extent, that vision seems justified. This book was meticulously researched and created over a period of six years in, Paris, Tehran and Washington by photographer, Mehdi Khansari and architect Minouch Yavari, together with the renowned Persian architect and architectural historian Reza Moghtader. It explains the philosophy behind Persian garden design and offers an authoritative account of its developmentintroducing new historical material in the process. This extraordinary story is enhanced by vivid descriptions of Persian gardens as seen through the eyes of travelers to Iran during the past five hundred years. Over 240 illustrations in full color, complement the text. They include magnificent color photographs, old plates and engravings, as well as exquisite architectural renderings and plans of the sites and the gardens. A selection of the finest Persian garden-carpets, textiles, miniature paintings, stone reliefs, painted tiles, pottery, and poetry, augment the reader’s experience of an ancient art form that for centuries has sought to meld the physical and the spiritual.

The Past, Present, and Future—Exposed The events wracking the Middle East today are confusing to even the most avid news buff. Now all the answers to your questions are offered in just one resource. Divided into five main sections, Iran: The Coming Crisis contains the most up-to-date, thorough information available and is complete with maps, charts, and timelines for visual assistance. Iran’s past, present, and future are exposed—the country’s quest for nuclear weapons and support of Palestinian terror groups, its ability to “play the oil card,” and Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s apocalyptic beliefs that motivate his actions. You’ll discover the truth about today’s events, how they relate to Bible prophecy, and what the Bible clearly describes is yet to come. It’s a crisis unlike any the world has ever faced. Are We Headed for a Nuclear Jihad? “ Israel must be wiped off the map,” Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said it himself. He has denied the Holocaust, and his actions are motivated by a dangerous apocalyptic view of Islam. Meanwhile, Islamic extremists are in hot pursuit of nuclear weapons as they stand as gatekeepers to the Persian Gulf oil flow. Closer to home, President Bush has stated that the greatest threat to America is nuclear terrorism. In a prophecy written over 2,500 years ago, Ezekiel 38-39 foretells Iran ’s future. Iran , Russia , and other Islamic nations will invade Israel in the end times. Today, the connection between Iran and Russia only grows. How close is this invasion? What will happen? Will America survive? Will the world? Mark Hitchcock , an expert in Bible prophecy, exposes Iran ’s past, present, and future with striking clarity. Find maps, charts, and answers to your every question inside. “I highly recommend Mark as a faithful guide to understanding current events in light of God’s wonderful plan of prophecy.” Tim LaHaye Pastor and bestselling author Story Behind the BookThere seems to be no turning back from the looming crisis in the Middle East. The Islamic and political rulers of Iran are set in their ideology by principle. The West and Israel are headed for some sort of confrontation economically, socially, and likely militarily. Mark Hitchcock ’s background as a lawyer, pastor, and expert in Bible prophecy suits him perfectly as a Christian authority on the subject. Timing is critical, and his new book will release as more and more everyday people—Christians and non-Christians alike—realize the gravity of world events and question how they relate to Bible prophecy.

Persian Mirrors: The Elusive Face of Iran
$4.99
As a correspondent for Newsweek and The New York Times, Sciolino has had more experience covering revolutionary Iran than any other American reporter. She was aboard the airplane that took Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to Tehran in 1979 and was there for the revolution, the hostage crisis, the Iran-Iraq war, the rise of President Khatami, the riots of 1999, and the crisis over Iran’s nuclear program. In Persian Mirrors, Sciolino takes us into the public and private spaces of Iran, uncovering an alluring and seductive nation where a great battle is raging – not for control over territory, but for the soul of its people.
We Are Iran: The Persian Blogs
$64.6
DIVIn September 2001, a young Iranian journalist, Hossein Derakhshan, created one of the first weblogs in Farsi. When he also devised a simple how-to-blog guide for Iranians, it unleashed a torrent of hitherto unheard opinions. There are now 64,000 blogs in Farsi, and Nasrin Alavi has painstakingly reviewed them all, weaving the most powerful and provocative into a striking picture of the flowering of dissent in Iran. From one blogger’s blasting of the Supreme Leader as a “pimp” to another’s mourning for an identity crushed by the stifling protection of her male relatives, this collection functions not only as an archive of Iranians’ thoughts on their country, culture, religion, and the rest of the world, but also as an alternative recent history of Iran. Government crackdowns may soon still these voices — in February 2005, one blogger was sentenced to 14 years in jail — andiWe Are Iran/imay serve as the only serious record of their existence./div

Persian Lions, Persian Lambs: An American’s Odyssey in Iran
$18.44
At the height of the Cold War a young American teaches in provincial Iran, near the Russian border. His students reveal their inner selves, their struggles to be modern, while still caught in ancient Persian traditions. Hailed as a travel book in the great tradition, the Chicago Tribune called it a delicious rarity that one is sorry to finish but happy to recommend, and the London Sunday Telegraph: Observant and often poignant, it is profound in its questions. The New York Times Book Review: An urbane and well-written account . Mr. Harnack has eminently succeeded.

Iran’s Persian Gulf Policy: From Khomeni to Khatami
$213.4
This book examines the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards the Persian states from 1979 to 1998. It covers perceptions Iranians and Arabs have of each other, Islamic revolutionary ideology, the Iran-Iraq war, the Gulf crisis, the election of President Khatami and finally the role of external powers, such as the United States. The author argues that over the twenty year period, the policy has moved from being ideological to pragmatic; and that by tracing its history, we can better anticipate its future relationship.
Birth of the Persian Empire: The Idea of Iran, Volume I
$58.72
DIVDIVThis book explores the formation of the first Persian Empire under the Achaemenid Persians. It brings together a multi-disciplinary view of ancient Iran in the first millennium BC and concentrates on the art, archaeology, history and religion of a vast geographical area far beyond the present borders of modern Iran in the period beginning just before the formation of the Persian empire in the middle of the 6th century up to its collapse following conquest by Alexander the Great in the late 4th century BC. Eminent scholars offer a critical approach to some of the traditional interpretations and guide the reader towards a better understanding of the formation of the Persian empire. This is the first volume in the four-volume IIdea of Iran/Iseries./DIVDIV /DIVDIVDIVCharting over 1000 years of history,IIThe Idea of Iran/I/Iseries offers a significant new appraisal of one the most fascinating, but also (at least in the West) relatively little known, of the great civilizations of antiquity. Comprising four substantial volumes, which have emerged from a series of seminars held under the joint auspices of the London Middle East Institute and the British Museum, and supported by the Soudavar Memorial Foundation, the series explores the empires which have shaped the culture of Iran. Beginning with the Achaemenid dynasty of Cyrus the Great, which founded Persian imperial rule in the middle of the sixth century BCE, the series goes on to examine, amongst other key topics, the society, religion, and government of ancient Iran under the Parthians, Sasanians and the Arab rulers of the early Islamic period.IIThe Idea of Iran/I/Iwill be mandatory reading for all serious scholars and students of ancient and early medieval Iranian history./DIV/DIV/DIVDIVDIVIntroduction–Vesta Sarkhosh Curtis and Sarah Stewart * The Elamites and their Contribution to the Creation of Iran–Daniel Potts * New Research on the Avestan Geography–F@M\(õÂ?\ÿ¾Úx

Safavid Iran: Rebirth of a Persian Empire
$29.5
DIVDIVPThe Safavid dynasty, which reigned from the late fifteenth to the eighteenth century, links medieval with modern Iran. The Safavids witnessed wide-ranging developments in politics, warfare, science, philosophy, religion, art and architecture. But how did this dynasty manage to produce the longest lasting and most glorious of Iran’s Islamic-period eras?/PPAndrew Newman offers a complete re-evaluation of the Safavid place in history as they presided over these extraordinary developments and the wondrous flowering of Iranian culture. In the process, he dissects the Safavid story, from before the 1501 capture of Tabriz by Shah Ismail (1488-1524), the point at which Shi`ism became the realm’s established faith; on to the sixteenth and early seventeenth century dominated by Shah Abbas (1587-1629), whose patronage of art and architecture from his capital of Isfahan embodied the Safavid spirit; and culminating with the reign of Sultan Husayn (reg. 1694-1722)./PPBased on meticulous scholarship, Newman offers a valuable new interpretation of the rise of the Safavids and their eventual demise in the eighteenth century.ISafavid Iran/I, with its fresh insights and new research, is the definitive single volume work on the subject./P/DIV/DIVDIVP* Preface and Acknowledgements * Map: Iran in the Safavid Period * Introduction * Laying the Foundations: Ismail I (1488-1524) * Reconfiguration and Consolidation: The Reign of Tahmasp (1524-1576) * The Second Civil War: Ismail II (1576-1577) and Khudabanda (1578-1587) * Monumental Challenges and Monumental Responses: The Reign of Abbas I (1587-1629) * Shifts at the Centre and a Peace Dividend: Shah Abbas II (1642-1666) * The Peace Dividend Consolidated: Shah Abbas II (1642-1666) * Meeting the Challenges: Shah Sulayman (1666.68-1694) * Denouement or Defeat: The Reign of Shah Sultan Husayn (1694-1722) * Epilogue: Poetry and Politics – The Multiplicity of Safavid Discourse * Appendix I: Key @=€

He lives in Washington, D.C.CHAPTER 1brbrbrbrFrom Persepolis to the Pahlavis To understand the labyrinth of U.S.-Iranian relations, there are at least three things that you need to know about the seven millennia of Iranian history before the twentieth century. The first is that the land that is today Iran is the heir to a long line of remarkable predecessors. In its day, the Persian Empire was a superpower like nothing the world had ever seen—with a monotheistic religion, a vast army, a rich civilization, a new and remarkably efficient method of administration, and territory stretching from Egypt to Central Asia. All Iranians know that history well, and it is a source of enormous pride to them. It has given them a widely remarked sense of superiority over all of their neighbors, and, ironically, while Tehran now refers to the United States by the moniker “Global Arrogance,” within the Middle East a stereotypical complaint against Iranians is their own arrogant treatment of others.1brbrThe second important aspect of Iran’s early history that still defines the Iranian state and has had a tremendous impact on U.S.-Iranian relations is that for the last five hundred years, Iran has been the only Shi’i Muslim state in the world. Though 90 percent of all Muslims are Sunni, there are a number of countries where Shi’ah make up either a majority (Bahrain, Iraq, Iran) or a significant minority (Lebanon, Saudi A?ù™™™™™šÿ¾Úx
Modern Iran
$4.48
In this substantially revised and expanded version of Nikki Keddie’s classic work Roots of Revolution, the author brings the story of modern Iran to the present day, exploring the political, cultural, and social changes of the past quarter century. Keddie provides insightful commentary on the Iran-Iraq war, the Persian Gulf War, and the effects of 9/11 and Iran’s strategic relationship with the U.S. She also discusses developments in education, health care, the arts, and the role of women.
The Soul of Iran
$13.48
The truths about Iran—quite different truths from versions put forward by Washington, Tehran, and the media.Iran thundered onto the world stage in 1979 with an Islamic revolution that shook the world. Today that revolution has gone astray, a popular democracy movement boldly challenges authority, and young Iranians are more interested in moving to America than in chanting "Death to America." Afshin Molavi, born in Iran and fluent in Persian, traveled widely across his homeland, exploring the legacy of the Iranian revolution and probing the soul of Iran, a land with nearly three millennia of often-glorious history. Like a master Persian carpet maker, Molavi weaves together threads of rich historical insight, political analysis, cultural observation, and the daily realities of life in the Islamic republic to produce a colorful, intricate, and mesmerizing narrative. Originally published in hardcover under the title Persian Pilgrimages, this paperback edition is revised, with a new introduction and epilogue.

Revolutionary Iran
$29.48
The policies and actions of revolutionary Iran continue to reverberate throughout the world. Now with a new epilogue on the Iranian-American arms deal. "Revolutionary Iran" is the most incisive account to date of the Khomeini regime’s foreign policy and its impact on international affairs. Despite its stridency. Iran has subtly and steadily moved toward a more pragmatic foreign policy. In the new epilogue, R. K. Ramazani probes the most striking manifestation of this tendency– the secret arms-for-hostages dealings that formed Iran’s "America initiative". He relates this initiative to Iran’s factional domestic politics and its angry conflict with the United States in the Persian Gulf. "Revolutionary Iran" demands the attention of anyone concerned with American interests in the Middle East.

The Persian Sphinx (in Persian)
$29.48
THIS IS THE PERSIAN LANGUAGE EDITION OF THE PERSIAN SPHINX Who lost Iran? How and why did a country, never richer, never more educated, its women never more liberated erupt in a fundamentalist revolution? the answer can be found in the enthralling life and tragic death of one man. Amir Abbas Hoveyda was a central figure in the historic struggle between modernity and tradition in Iran — a struggle pitting Western cosmopolitanism against Persian isolationism, secularism against religious fundamentalism, and ultimately civil society and democracy against authoritarianism. Born in Tehran in 1919 to a family of solid middle class comforts and faded aristocratic roots, Hoveyda was an elegant, cultivated, well-read, and witty man, educated in Beirut, London, and Brussels. After entering the Iranian foreign service in 1942, he served in France, Germany, and Turkey, then returned to Iran in 1956 to join the National Iranian Oil Company. In 1965, the shah appointed him the country’s prime minister. Hoveyda would serve faithfully in that post for thirteen years. Amir Abbas Hoveyda embodied the aspirations, the accomplishments and also the failures of a whole generation of Iranian technocrats — mostly Western-trained — who sought to free Iran from the travails of poverty and repression and guide it into the modern age. Hoveyda would be both a leader and a victim of that effort. On the eve of the Islamic Revolution, the shah, attempting to turn the rising tide of revolt by offering a scapegoat, ordered the prime minister’s arrest. When the Pahlavi regime fell, Hoveyda chose not to flee, voluntarily surrendering to the new Islamic authorities. His hope was for a public trial; instead the infamous "Hanging Judge" presided over a secret and summary trial. In telling the story of Hoveyda’s life, the author has not only laid bare the development of Iranian society during a pivotal period (1919 1978) but has also unearthed important new material on U.S.-Iranian relations. From 1957 onward, Amir Abbas Hoveyda played critical roles in dealing with U.S. foreign policy and fundamentalist Islamic opposition in Iran. Through careful use of hitherto-unexamined archival materials, unpublished letters, and personal journals, along with extensive interviews with more than a hundred of Hoveyda’s relatives, friends, and foes, the author has brilliantly caught the pathos and passion of Hoveyda’s life and times. The Persian Sphinx is biography at its most powerful and will reward the scholar and the general reader alike.
Iran and the Bomb
$20.48
The Iranian regime is in the middle of a dangerous nuclear poker game with the West. Drawing on her inside knowledge and experience, Thérèse Delpech provides a hard-hitting analysis of Iran’s intentions and its ability to beguile the international community, often with the aid of China and Russia, two countries eager to benefit from Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons. Delpech is one of the world’s leading authorities on international nuclear security, and in this book, she dissects Iran’s program in minute detail. Delpech begins with a history of Iran’s nuclear project-which was launched with the help of several Western countries-from the 1970s to today. She examines the reasons behind Iran’s renewed interest in nuclear power during its war with Iraq, and the national pride, exemplified by Mahmoud Amadinejad’s bellicose rhetoric, that prevents the country from bowing to the dictates of the international community. Then she dissects the strategy of the various actors in this new global crisis: Iran, the commonly termed EU "3" (United Kingdom, France, and Germany), the United States, Russia, China, and the International Atomic Energy Agency.Delpech follows with an analysis of the feasibility, practicality, and political viability of such possible solutions as dismantling by force, supervised third party reprocessing, referral to the United Nations’ Security Council, and Iranian appeasement. In conclusion, Delpech unravels the tangled regional and international dimensions of the crisis, detailing the enormous impact of Iran’s game on the Persian Gulf, Turkey, the political and military movements of Israel, America’s presence in Iraq and the wider Middle East, and the future of the much-weakened Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

bChristopher de Bellaigue/bwas born in London in 1971 and has worked as a journalist in the Middle East and South Asia since 1994. His first book,iIn the Rose Garden of the Martyrs: A Memoir of Iran/i, was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize. He lives in Tehran with his wife and two children. When Christopher de Bellaigue first visited Iran in 1999, he found it irresistably alive: under the leadership of President Mohammad Khatami, Islamic revolutionary rule was loosening and the prospects for democratic pluralism seemed bright. But over the remaining six years of Khatami’s presidency, de Bellaigue watched as the conservative religious establishment reasserted its power and the hopes of reform slowly died. The country seemed to turn its back on all that Khatami stood for when it elected an unsophisticated Islamist ideologue, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to succeed him in 2005.brbrAs the optimism of the reform movement was fading, international tensions over Iran’s nuclear program were rising. George W. Bush included Iran in the "axis of evil," depicting it as a malign theocracy determined to acquire nuclear weapons and threaten Israel. Yet de Bellaigue’s accounts of the nuclear negotiations make clear that the West’s opposition to Iranian nuclear ambitions has helped both to empower those who oppose democratic reform and perhaps even to convince Iran it needs nuclear weapons for self-defense.brbrBeyond the high political drama, de Bellaigue, a long-term resident of Tehran and a fluent Persian speaker, gives a sense of the complexities of Iranian culture and society through striking portraits of Iranians going about their daily lives—reading the poetry of Rumi, looking at modern art, making films under the threat of censorship, trying to get by despite domestic turmoil and military threats. His keen analyses of Iran’s politics and its people offer fascinating insights into a often misunderstood nation that pos?û®záG®ÿ¾Úx

Hadland Davis and first published in 1907-cross all cultural and religious bounds, and can still be heard today in many secular and religious settings. The Persian Mystics: Jalalu’d-din Rumi includes selections from some of Rumi’s most famous works, the "Divani Shamsi Tabriz" and the "Masnavi," as well as passages on his life and work, and the origin and nature of Sufism. An English-Persian Dictionary
$28.52
Gilani’s (Persian, Stanford U.) dictionary differs from others by not being published in Iran for Persian speakers, and therefore emphasizes pronouncing the Persian rather than the English words. He includes words that are of Arabic, Turkish, and other origins as well as those originally part of the language Iranians call Farsi, because his goal is to introduce English speakers to the language and eventually the culture, rather than to purge foreign influences. The dictionary is one-way, only English to Persian, and includes transliteration in Latin letters as well as the Persian spelling.

Naipaul, Anne Tyler, and other writers, Nahid Rachlin has spent her career writing novels about hidden Iran-the combustible political passions underlying everyday life and the family dramas of ordinary Iranians. When Rachlin was an infant, her mother gave her to Maryam, Rachlin’s barren and widowed aunt. For the next nine years, the little girl lived a blissful Iranian childhood. Then one day, Rachlin’s father kidnapped his daughter from her schoolyard, and from the only mother she’d ever known, and returned her to her birth family-strangers to the young girl. In a story of ambition, oppression, hope, heartache, and sisterhood, Persian Girls traces Rachlin’s coming of age in Iran under the late Shah-and her domineering father-her tangled family life, and her relationship with her older sister, and unexpected soul mate, Pari. Both girls refused to accept traditional roles prescribed for them under Muslim cultural laws. They devoured forbidden books. They had secret romances. But then things quickly changed. Pari was forced by her parents to marry a wealthy suitor, a cruel man who kept her a prisoner in her own home. After narrowly avoiding an unhappy match herself with a man her parents chose for her, Nahid came to America, where she found literary success. Back in Iran, however, Pari’s dreams fell to pieces. When news came to Nahid that her sister had died, she traveled back to the country where she had grown up, now under the Islamic regime the West has been keeping a wary eye on for the last few years, to say good-bye to her only friend. It is there she confronts her past, and the women of her family. A story of promises kept and promises broken, of dreams and secrets, and, most important, of sisters, Persian Girls is a gripping saga that will change the way anyone looks at Iran and the women who populate it.
Iran: A Short History
$25.61
No country in the Islamic Middle East presents as unique and distinguished a history and culture as Iran, which has managed to maintain its inherent characteristics – some of them from pre-Islamic times – over the course of centuries of changing dynasties and rulers. The Shiite faith, the official religion of Persia/Iran since 1501, stands in contrast to the Sunni Arabs who dominate the greater region. Iran endured European colonialism in the 20th century to a greater extent than any other Middle Eastern country, yet after the revolution of 1979, which made Iran the first Islamic Republic, Shiism and Persian culture remain intact. Monika Gronke presents the history of this country from the Islamization of the 7th century to the present in a clear and lively style, and describes the cultural, social, and religious developments that shaped Iran and the Iranian self-image.
Persian Letters
$26.34
This richly evocative novel-in-letters tells the story of two Persian noblemen who have left their country – the modern Iran – to journey to Europe in search of wisdom. As they travel, they write home to wives and eunuchs in the harem and to friends in France and elsewhere. Their colourful observations on the culture differences between West and East culture conjure up Eastern sensuality, repression and cruelty in contrast to the freer, more civilized West – but here also unworthy nobles and bishops, frivolous women of fashion and conceited people of all kinds are satirized. Storytellers as well as letter-writers, Montesquieu’s Usbek and Rica are disrespectful and witty, but also serious moralists. Persian Letters was a succes de scandale in Paris society, and encapsulates the libertarian, critical spirit of the early eighteenth century.
The Cambridge History of Iran
$122.48
Volume 4 is a survey of every aspect of the civilisations which flourished in the Iranian region from the Arab conquests to the Saljuq expansion: in particular, it studies the gradual transition of Iran from Zoroastrianism to Islam, the uniting of all Iranians under one rule, the flowering into full magnificence of the Persian language, and the establishment of those other acts which were to flourish so brilliantly after the Mongol conquest. The volume as a whole provides a comprehensive record of the formative centuries of Islam in Iran.
The International Politics of the Persian Gulf
$39.95
Examines the causes and consequences of conflict in one of the most important regions of the world – the Persian Gulf. Modern Iran since 1921
$44.98
Combining detailed historical narrative with comprehensive analysis and explanation, Ali Ansari presents a new interpretation of the complex cultural polity that is modern Iran. Straddled between the world’s two major energy basins, the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea, and possessing a rich reservoir of hydrocarbon resources as well as diverse minerals, Iran has always been economically significant. The Islamic Revolution thrust the country back onto the political centre-stage, and dramatically altered relations between Iran and the West. This book looks at these developments within an historical context. It charts how Iran sought to respond to the challenge of the West through reform and revolution, and to reverse the decline of the previous century with an ambitious program of development. This text offers a new interpretation of key events including the 1979 Revolution and the origins of the Iran-Iraq war. The author uses wide range of foreign and Persian sources including interviews with key players and shows how domestic and international events combined to produce certain outcomes. For readers interested in the Middle East.
Iran: The Coming Crisis
$7.99
Are we headed for a nuclear Jihad? “Israel must be wiped off the map,” Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said it himself. In a prophecy written over 2,500 years ago, Ezekiel 38-39 foretells Iran’s future. Iran, Russia, and other Islamic nations will invade Israel in the end times. Today, the connection between Iran and Russia only grows. How close is this invasion? What will happen? Will America survive? Will the world? Mark Hitchcock , an expert in Bible prophecy, exposes IranÂ’s past, present, and future with striking clarity. Iran and the United States
$251.48
A variety of political, economic, social, and security factors have created a situation conducive to the gradual formation of a regional grouping in West Asia. The countries of the Persian Gulf, Caucasus, and Central Asia are gradually gathering around Iran, a rising regional power. Regional and international isolation, sanctions, the Iran-Iraq War, and financial difficulties deprived Iran of its suppliers and forced it to develop itself to meet its needs. Iran has long-term interests in these three neighboring and energy-producing regions where the United States also has strategic interests. Peimani argues that the current unfriendly relations between the two countries are counterproductive for both and damage their interests. They can and must cooperate in these regions as their interests are not opposite and antagonistic, but different and compatible. Their interests require stability in these regions, for which the two should cooperate. As he points out, they must and can normalize their relations, among other factors, to preserve their long-term interests in these regions and elsewhere.

Refashioning Iran

Mohamad Tavakoli-Targhi offers a corrective to recent works on Orientalism that focus solely on European scholarly productions without exploring the significance of native scholars and vernacular scholarship to the making of Oriental studies. He brings to light a wealth of eighteenth and nineteenth-century Indo-Persian texts, made "homeless" by subsequent nationalist histories and shows how they relate to Indo-Iranian modernity. In doing so, he argues for a radical rewriting of Iranian history with profound implications for Islamic debates on gender.

New Visual Culture of Modern Iran

Reza Abedini’s presentation about contemporary Persian typography at the AGI conference in Helsinki in 2003 made clear to those in attendance that the subject merited a book. Iran underwent many changes in the wake of the 1979 Revolution. The sources of creative influence in Iran expanded as a result of the uprising, and the passing of time has incorporated those changes into the country’s cultural fabric in ways that may surprise most Westerners. This publication shows a new side of Iran, one we do not often read about in newspapers.
Public Health in Qajar Iran
$35.9
Until now, there have been no books and only a few articles available in English that deal with the actual practice of medicine in nineteenth and early twentieth-century Iran. Willem Floor’s Public Health in Qajar Iran fills this lacuna, giving a broad and comprehensive survey of the state of public health, medical practice, and its practitioners in 1800-1925. Based on firsthand accounts of European travelers and doctors who practiced and observed medical treatment, the study provides an overview of the major diseases the population suffered and how these were treated. It also includes the available evidence logged by Iranian patients abroad and at home, as well as contemporary Persian texts that comment on public health and its practice in Iran. Floor shuns the analysis of classic Islamic medical textbooks, explaining that their medical advice was hardly ever administered and that the authors often had ideological (religious) agendas in writing these treatises. Instead, Floor investigates the commonly accepted theories of diseases, disorders, and their cures, including Islamic Galenic medicine and pre-Islamic theurgic folk medicine based on traditional herb lore and trial-and-error. The book concludes with the impact of Western medicine on the traditional medical institutions and public health in Qajar Iran. This exhaustive inquiry will enthrall scholars of Iran and medicine alike.

Furthermore, issues like the legal regime of the Caspian Sea and the UAE claims on the Iranian-owned and Iranian-held islands of Tunbs and Abu Musa in the Persian Gulf create a situation in Iran?s neighbourhood, which influence her foreign relations and engage the country in matters of international importance. Adept at cultivating powerful connections, he became the principal supplier of luxury goods to the Shah, his court, and members of the ruling elite; served as private banker to the Shah, his prime minister, and influential bureaucrats; and became Master of the Mint. He had agents in all the main towns of Persia and Europe with correspondents in Asia and America.Amin al-Zarb was also an entrepreneur, industrialist, and innovator. The British-Soviet occupation of Iran in 1941 provided Stalin with the golden opportunity to fulfill an age old dream, nurtured by Russian rulers since Peter the Great, of getting closer to the warm waters of Persian Gulf. He could not let this dream slip through his hands too easily. Consequently, we had the Azerbaijan crisis of 1946.

Early Mongol Rule in Thirteenth-Century Iran: A Persian Renaissance
$158.92
An account of the re-emergence of Persia as a world player and the reassertion of its cultural, political and spiritual links with Turan, this book opposes the way in which, for too long, the whole period of Mongol domination of Iran has been viewed from a negative standpoint. Though arguably the initial irruption of the Mongols brought little comfort to those in its path, this is not the case with the second ‘invasion’ of the Chinggisids. This study demonstrates that Hulegu Khan came as a welcomed king rather than as a conqueror. It paints a picture of the early Il-Khanate as a cultural and spiritual renaissance and reveals both Hulegu and his son Abaqa as fathers of that legacy.
Persian Love Poetry
$15.48
Love is a major theme in Persian poetry and can be interpreted in various ways-as mystic love, the basis of the relationship between humans and God, or as passionate or affectionate love between lovers, husbands and wives, parents and children, family and friends, or even as patriotic love of Iran. The literary style and indeed the Persian language itself are floral and elaborate, but the themes differ little from our preoccupations with love and romance today. This collection of extracts has been selected from the best of traditional and contemporary Persian poetry. Each poem is illustrated with a fine example of Persian art from the collections of the British Museum. With a brief introduction to the Persian poetic tradition and a short biographical note about each of the poets, this beautiful anthology is the perfect way to discover the treasures of Persian literature and art.

The Soul of Iran: A Nation’s Struggle for Freedom
$7.98
Iran thundered onto the world stage in 1979 with an Islamic revolution that shook the world. Today that revolution has gone astray, a popular democracy movement boldly challenges authority, and young Iranians are more interested in moving to America than in chanting Death to America. Afshin Molavi, born in Iran and fluent in Persian, traveled widely across his homeland, exploring the legacy of the Iranian revolution and probing the soul of Iran, a land with nearly three millennia of often-glorious history. Like a master Persian carpet maker, Molavi weaves together threads of rich historical insight, political analysis, cultural observation, and the daily realities of life in the Islamic republic to produce a colorful, intricate, and mesmerizing narrative. Originally published in hardcover under the title iPersian Pilgrimages/i, this paperback edition is revised, with a new introduction and epilogue. The truths about Iran; quite different truths from versions put forward by Washington, Tehran, and the media.
