The Persian Gulf
$63.48
The Persian Gulf: The Economic and Political History of Five Port Cities, 1500-1730 provides the most comprehensive overview to date of the Persian Gulf at a time of major political change, including the successive arrival of the European `trading empires’. The study emphasizes the role of the local elites and how its members manipulated and used the administrative structures for their own gain. It also delves into various aspects of the governance of the ports. Based on a large variety of sources, including the unpublished information from Dutch and Portuguese archives, it makes clear that the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman were an integrated part of the Indian Ocean network in terms of trade, culture, migration and politics. Despite that interconnectedness there were significant differences between the various competing Persian Gulf ports. These differences (as well as the similarities) in the political economy of each of the five major ports of the period (Hormuz, Bandar `Abbas, Masqat, Bandar-e Kong and Basra) are highlighted. The pattern of the local administration, the socio-economic and political structure, the morphology of each port as well as what that meant for the development and nature of trade that was carried on in each of the ports are discussed in detail. The controlling influence of the hinterland on each of these ports is stressed, while many prevailing wrong notions about the role and importance of Europeans, the nature of trade and what drove political developments in the Persian Gulf are corrected.
Persian Flatweaves
$36.05
This is the first comprehensive survey of the vast and fascinating subject of Persian flatweaves, and in particular floor covers. Previous publications on the subject have largely been dealers’ restricted catalogues focusing on a narrow geographical area or the weavings of a particular group, or sections in more general books. This book thus fills a huge gap in the
oriental carpet
and textile literature. Flatweaves have until recently been seen as merely the products and property of the poor. Since the late 1960s, however, growing attention has been paid to the best known type of flatweave, the gelim, revealing both its quality and variety. Other flatweaves, such as the palas, which is no less frequently found than the gelim, have scarcely been mentioned in any of the literature published so far, yet are shown in this work to be objects of great beauty and diversity. The book is divided into two parts. The first deals with the cultural background to the subject. Drawing on literary sources as well
The Figure in the Carpet
$8.99
For himself, beyond doubt, the thing we were all so blank about was vividly there. It was something, I guessed, in the primal plan, something like a complex figure in a Persian carpet. He highly approved of this image when I used it, and he used another himself. It’s the very string, he said, that my pearls are strung on! The reason of his note to me had been that he really didn’t want to give us a grain of succor — our density was a thing too perfect in its way to touch. He had formed the habit of depending on it, and if the spell was to break it must break by some force of its own. He comes back to me from that last occasion — for I was never to speak to him again — as a man with some safe preserve for sport. I wondered as I walked away where he had got _his_ tip.

$24.29
In the early hours of August 2, 1990, one hundred thousand mechanized troops of Saddam Hussein s Iraqi army roared and rumbled across the border into Kuwait. By noon of August 4, the tiny, oil-rich nation belonged to the Iraqi invaders. When informed of Iraq s unprovoked aggression, U.S. President George H. W. Bush said, This will not stand. In defense of Saudi Arabia and stability in the Middle East, he drew a line in the sand. Operating under the umbrella of the United Nations, President Bush assembled a multinational coalition and prepared for war. Over the next five months, Saddam refused to accept UN diplomatic efforts for Iraq s complete withdrawal from Kuwait. He ignored a UN ultimatum to withdraw by January 15, 1991. On January 17, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Iraqis reaped the lethal consequences of their leader s aggression and defiance. A huge coalition air armada struck Baghdad and ushered in a new era of high-tech warfare.

Iran: Persian Classical Music
$11.98
From the old Nonesuch Explorer series comes this album of classical Persian music, originally released in 1974 and re-released on CD in 1991. The album contains a number of nice virtuoso performances on the various instruments of the Persian classical repertoire. The ensemble leader Faramarz Payvar provides some outstanding work on the santur in most of the dastgah performances. Also, the zarb player Mohammad Esmai’li performs an amazing solo on his drum, nearly incorporating melody into the work with a single percussion instrument. The tar playing also stands out exceptionally in “Dastgah Chahargah,” as Houshang Zarif pumps out an outstanding run on his lute. For a basic overview of Persian classical, this album does a pretty good job of showing off the major instruments and vocals, all with the dastgah framework. At the same time, it’s mildly simplistic, as are many of the Explorer series albums. For a newcomer to Persian music, this wouldn’t be a bad place to start for a basic overview, though those better acquainted with the basics might prefer a slightly more comprehensive compilation, such as Rounder’s Iran installment of the Anthology of World Music. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music GuidePerformers: Rahmatollah Badi’i – Kamanche; Mohammad Esmai’li – Zarb; Houshang Zarif – Tar, Taragat; Khatereh Parvaneh – Singer, Vocals; Faramarz Payvar – Dulcimer (Hammer), Santoor, Santouri, Santur

Mostly Miniatures: An Introduction to Persian Painting
$20.79
Grabar has made many contributions to the study of early Islamic art and now turns his considerable powers to the study of the art of Persian painting. . . . He offers many ways to work toward future avenues of research, all of which will benefit upcoming scholars of Persian painting. The general public will benefit from his advice to examine the paintings for the personal pleasure of entering a very private world. The serious study of Persian art is barely 100 years old, and Oleg Grabar’s authoritative overview stresses how little we know about these brilliantly colored and wittily composed miniatures and manuscripts.Fascinating. . . . An invaluable guide to the topic whose informative, well written text and beautifully reproduced illustrations attest to the author’s depth of knowledge. . . . This is a scholarly book that can also be enjoyed by the uninitiated.}An} infectiously enthusiastic book. . . . }A} superb introduction, which combines critical sophistication with clarity and accessibility. . . . The fact that Grabar never forgets the role of pleasure is one of the strengths of the book. — Phil Baker The Art BookpThe mention of Persian painting conjures up images of beautifully illuminated manuscripts filled with tiny, intricate pictures, each a miniature festival of color. Anyone who has seen Persian miniatures up close will attest to their captivating power. In this book, the renowned historian of Islamic art Oleg Grabar introduces Western audiences to Persian painting, which consists primarily of miniatures illustrating works of literature, but also includes murals and small ceramics decorated with pictures. The masterpieces of this painting have a visual richness that requires the use of the intellect as well as the eye for their appreciation, and Grabar seeks to situate the reader within their world, that of Islamic culture in Iran from the Middle Ages to Modern times. Through a series of chapters on various aspects of Persian painting, he helps us u@4Ê=p£×ÿ¾Úx
